Contemporary Wood Art Auction on June 15th and 16th from the AAW

The American Association of Woodturners’ annual wood art auctions feature original works by talented studio woodturners and artists. This great event runs over two days on Friday June 15th and Saturday June 16th with a chance to buy that beautiful bowl, platter, or sculpture from the comfort of a desktop, laptop, tablet, or mobile phone. Each piece is stunning in visual, and beautiful in it’s preparation. This is an auction not to be missed by anyone interested in wood art and woodturning. Registrations are available every day online right up until auction day.

Highlighted on Friday night is a piece from the Corvus Nero Collection entitled Irish Dawn, 2018 by Sally Burnett from the United Kingdom. This stunning creation is explains as follows in the online catalog:

English sycamore, acrylic, copper-dyed silver leaf | 5 x 5 x 5 in/12.7 x 12.7 x 12.7 cm

Artist Statement:
This piece was turned during a trip to Northern Ireland. Although in my characteristic style, it is much smaller and more finely detailed than any other piece in this Collection and the wispy edges of the design became a feature after witnessing a misty morning sunrise from the seashore in Larne.

About the Artist:
“The thrill and sometimes frustration of working with a living material that moves and twists as I work cannot easily be conveyed in words but the shapes and textures that can be created are endless and the drive to be unique and push boundaries is exciting. These inherent challenges keep me moving forward to see how far I can develop the medium and what visual impact I can produce in each piece, whilst being sympathetic to the material itself.
As an emerging designer/maker in wood, I work with ethically sourced native English timbers, creating decorative vessels and sculptural forms with distinctive textures, pyrography and carving. I create movement across the surface with multiple layers of fine texture. Simple marks blended to form complex surfaces. Humans are naturally curious, the need to turn the piece, follow the curves, explore the tactile surface, question the nature of the material, engage the audience.”
