Their dead-of-winter auction has been a welcome respite for eager numismatists in normal years, but the current Geoffrey Bell Auctions Ltd. Paris in February Sale really amplifies that sentiment. With their first offering of 2021, Canada’s premier numismatic auction house puts something for every level of collector on the block. They have pulled out all the stops to acquire a brilliant array of rare and scarce coins, banknotes, tokens, and medals and now everything is set for a thirsty collecting community. Online bidding is already taking place and the auction goes live Saturday, February 20th from their offices in Moncton, New Brunswick.
This auction is normally held in conjunction with the popular Paris Coin Show, but COVID-19 has forced cancellation of the show. The firm’s virtual sales have proven to be a favorite with collectors since the onset of the pandemic as they continue to anticipate the needs of their clients, attracting a healthy bidder base and sellers wishing to give their material the best audience possible.
Canadian paper money highlights include an exceptional Dominion of Canada $1, 1917 graded by Legacy as an astounding Gem New 66PPQ; a rare Bank of Canada $10, 1971 replacement note with only 15 showing on the registry; and some significant error notes, such as a Bank of Canada $20, 1991 missing the intaglio printing and a Bank of Canada $5, 1937 with a rare wet ink transfer error showing the remains of the Coyne signature at top left.
There is also the opportunity to obtain some impressive bricks of ones and twos. These notes have recently lost their legal tender status from the Bank of Canada; but have not been demonetized and have some significant collector value in this form.
Coin collectors can bid on an uncirculated Canadian 1859 cent with the narrow 9/9 variety number 5; a choice almost uncirculated New Brunswick 1862 5-cent coin; and some uncirculated key-date silver dollars like the iconic 1948 dollar. There are also an impressive number of early uncirculated cents available.
Also offered is a nice selection of world coins, Canadian tokens and medals, gold and silver bullion, and even a rare chance for Canadian Tire coupon collectors to obtain sealed bundles of the retail giant’s money.
