Helm’s Native American Winter Bonanza catalog contains Native American artifacts such as Navajo weavings and Pueblo pottery, Pre-Columbian artifacts, and other pre-historic items such as arrowheads and other stone tools. They have featured a collection of stone artifacts from Illinois and California. This catalog also includes Native American and Mexican jewelry from the 20th century. Lot 67 is a museum quality piece for the most sophisticated of collectors. This is an Flaming-Eyed Olmec Duck Mortar with a John Jordan COA. Made of jadeite, the item measures 10″ x 21″ x 11.5″ and is from Olmec, Veracruz, Mexico. The eyes are carved and semi-drilled in the feather area. This piece weighs at least 40 pounds and is from an old, 1960s California collection. John R. Jordan Certificate of Authenticity is included for security. This is in great condition and bidders should inspect all the images in the online catalog. This piece opens for only $2000 and with high demand could hammer down upwards of $30000.
Lot 273 is a great example of some of the moccasins in the sale. These are early Blackfoot moccasins from circa 1890’s. They are made of deerhide, quills, silk, and glass. They measure about 10 ½” by 4” by 3” each. Included is a nice plexiglass box and there is a large array of photos in the online catalog. They are expecting to sell on the auction block between $3000 and $6000.
A gigantic Navajo Wedding Basket is up for grabs at Lot 333. This beautiful work is from the 1950s and is made of sumac and dye. It is the largest Navajo wedding basket seen to date and measures an incredible 37 inches wide. Most baskets measure between 12 and 18 inches so this is a wonderful and unique treasure at auction. Bidding opens at only $2000 for this rare and fascinating piece.
