The once iconic stadium complex that hosted some of the biggest events in sport's history now sits unoccupied and depleted, ultimately serving as a general symbol of a city in severe financial uncertainty. The Pontiac Silverdome was a Michigan sports coliseum during its heyday, with enough room for a capacity of more than 82,000, and held the title of the largest stadium in the NFL for three decades until 1997. It was recently announced that the arena's current owners will put all of its contents of the sports dome up for sale in an auction that is scheduled to be held on May 21.
Since the Detroit Lions moved into their current stadium Ford Field in 2001, the Pontiac Silverdome has remained mostly vacant, while also experiencing massive amounts of deterioration. The announcement of the auction comes at a time when the future of the stadium continues to remain clouded in doubt, and the move is considered a last chance for the owners to cash in on the arena before it is too late.
There are more than 4,000 antiques and collectibles being put up for bidding during the auction, and sports and popular culture fans will be intrigued by all the items being made available for purchase. Everything from pretzel warmers and official Pontiac Silverdome seats to Zamboni turf machines and authentic NFL scoreboards are being included in the auction, and the sale promoters report that every item will start at a minimum bid of $5. If no one enters a bid on a collectible, it will supposedly be thrown in the garbage.
Triple Investment Group LLC purchased the Pontiac Silverdome in 2009 for a little more than $500,000. Since its acquisition, the stadium has endured a number of environmental factors plaguing its facilities, including a roof collapsing due to a heavy winter storm that has yet to be refurbished. This auction is widely considered the last chance for sports fans to obtain a souvenir of a venue that has hosted some of the largest events in the world, from Super Bowls to parades for the Pope.
For sports fans who are consistently looking to bid on some of the most coveted and rare memorabilia items on the market, iCollector is always hosting a wide variety of collectible auctions that will suit the needs of anyone looking to bid on the most yearned-after souvenirs in sports.
