Ancient Olmec art
The Olmec civilization dates all the way back to 1000 BC and is considered to have laid the foundations for subsequent ancient Mesoamerican cultures such as the Mayas and the Aztecs. The Olmecs are perhaps best known for their construction of giant sculptures of human heads that have survived to this day mainly intact. This sturdy craftsmanship is reflected in the Olmec artifacts that are being auctioned off at this event. One of the most impressive specimens is a statue of an Olmec lord on a throne (lot #14). This piece is a stunning example of prehistoric sculpture. It is about 9 inches tall and weighs approximately 9 pounds. It was originally found in Veracruz, Mexico, right in the middle of the area that the Olmecs were known to have inhabited. In addition to this statue, collectors have an opportunity to acquire an authentic Olmec mask (lot #141). The iconic relic is made of dark green stone and features a carving of a jaguar on the front. Weighing just over 5 pounds, this is an authentic piece of Mesoamerican history.
Navajo crafts
The Navajo tribe was one of the largest and most influential of North America. This auction includes a number of intriguing textiles and crafts that are sure to pique the interests of Native American art collectors. The tapestries included in this auction are marvelous examples of the tribe's unique style. The large yei tapestry (lot #273) includes depictions of human figures while several other available weavings (lot #86, 90 and 100) feature more geometric designs. In addition to tapestries, there is also a lot of Navajo jewelry for sale including a silver bracelet (lot #340) and a turquoise necklace (lot #3).
