Lot Number 7 features a terrific Cheyenne Fully Beaded Cradle Board Cover valued at up to $4000. The full description in the catalog is:
“The lot features a terrific turn of the 19th Century Cheyenne Native American Indian fully beaded cradle board papoose cover. The piece shows an Indian tanned hide construction with long cut fringe accenting the bottom and a section of fully beaded Buffalo hide attached, adding to the art appeal and splendor of the piece. The piece shows all early 19th century glass trade seed beads with a chalk white base and traditional geometric patterns in black, red, and medium green all being accented by the fully beaded rope like edge at the top, a truly quality addition. The base of the cradle cover shows a fancy beaded edging done in black glass trade beads. The piece is from the Ted and Lilly Jarvis Collection of Wyoming and from the Ben Thompson Collection. The item measures 28 inches overall in length to the end of the fringe. Truly a fine condition original piece.”
One of the feature Colts of the sale debuts at Lot 45a. Presented for bidding is a rare 1860 Civilian Post Civil War 44 Revolver. There are several photos in the online catalog and bidding is opening well under the estimated value. The auctioneer describes the piece as follows:
“Offered for sale is a RARE Post Civil War Civilian Colt 1860 Army Percussion .44 Caliber Revolver. The pistol features a 8″ barrel, brass trigger guard, and deluxe handles. This variation is much more scarce than the usual military marked and cut for shoulder stock model. Easily identifiable by the lack of cut outs for shoulder stock, these beautiful Colts were very popular on the Western Frontier. Preferred by outlaws and lawmen alike as well as cowboys, buffalo hunters and frontiersmen well into the cartridge era as running out of cartridges was not a laughing matter when none could be procured, while powder and lead could always be found. Even Wild Bill Hickok carried a pair of Colt percussion revolvers until his death in 1876. This is an excellent example with all matching numbers including the barrel wedge, exc. markings including the Colt address on the barrel top, the Colt’s patent stamping on the frame and the correct tiny “44 CAL” stamp on the left side of the brass trigger guard, special factory fancy grained one piece walnut grips are excellent, nice screws, tight action and a particularly fine engraved cylinder scene, front sight has not been altered, excellent metal surfaces showing no signs of cleaning or polishing. Even the most advanced Colt collections lack an example of a rare Civilian Colt 1860 Frontier Army revolver like this. Very hard to obtain this historically significant variant especially in such exceptionally fine condition. This revolver was manufactured in 1868. Antique firearm.
