A historically significant letter penned by Thomas Jefferson is up on the auction block at Lot 11. This is a letter from 1793 to New York Governor George Clinton. The letter concerns the Iroquois who are a Native American group that had previously aligned themselves with the British during the Revolutionary War. Lot 244 presents a remarkable working paper representing notes from Albert Einstein and written likely circa 1938 or earlier. It is apparently notes for a paper he wrote entitled “On a Generalization of Kaluza’s Theory of Electricity” and details part of Einstein’s attempt to construct a unified theory of electromagnetism, gravitation, and quantum mechanics. The most valuable document in this catalog is an incredible piece from Adam Smith at Lot 262. This is a letter to the 1st Earl of Shelburne regarding the health of his son Thomas. Adam Smith was a Scottish moral professor and a respected pioneer of political economy (1723–1790) whose magnum opus, The Wealth of Nations, is considered the first modern work of economics.
